Important Announcement about the Future

I will try to make this brief, while also making sure that the important information is covered. As many of you know, in March I started a re-brand of my site at the behest of GSUSA. That is still in process.  On Monday I awoke to all but two of my almost 70 Etsy listings removed for "Intellectual Property Infringement." I won't say anything negative about GSUSA. They have every right to protect their property, which includes the trefoil, the silhouette logo, insignia (badges and pins), the name Girl Scouts, etc. 99% of what I design is my creation, the small details that contain the trademarked items make up only 1% of the design.

I thought about giving up, giving in and just folding. I felt defeated by the fact that every other store that I searched on Etsy offered products with the same "violations" as I had. Why were their shops still up and mine wasn't? Neither the GSUSA paralegal nor Etsy could say anything other than the other stores weren't reported. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought about the 99% vs. 1%, as well as my loyal customers.  So I've made the decision to redesign my products to comply with not only Etsy's rules but also the GSUSA copyright.

What does this mean for the blog?

The blog has already undergone a redesign that has been planned since spring when I changed the name of my Etsy store.  Anything on my Freebies page is not guaranteed to be there tomorrow. If there is anything you might want, it's a good idea to go download it, as everything, even my free stuff, will be redesigned.  I'm confident you will still love the refreshed items, however, if branding is important to you, then by all means go download stuff here.

What does this mean for the Etsy products?

What this means for the products in my Etsy store is that I'm currently working feverishly to redesign my everything. I didn't realize how time-consuming the task would be until I got started. So far I've managed to update just around 6-7 of the 68 products that I sell. Please note: if here is anything you have been watching, or planning to buy, please contact me to place an order. For the next week I will be taking custom order requests for current products. After the listings are changed and re-uploaded, I will no longer offer the products as they are currently designed.

How will the new items look different?

Basically anywhere there is a trefoil, silhouette trefoil design, reference to Girl Scouts, badges/pins/other insignia, those items will be removed. Replacing them will be graphics, hearts, shapes and icons to represent the items that have been removed. I will still reference troops, age levels and insignia name, but there will no longer be a representation of them graphically.

Will your colors and designs change?

No, the designs will have the same colors, elements and style that you're accustomed to. There will be slight changes, but those changes are a very small part of the overall design. Think of them as punctuation.

When will the products be back up?

The products should be back up by November 6th. I will start updating products and re-listing them tomorrow.

My own store...The future

I'm working on hosting my own store, independent from Etsy on a new domain www.strawjenberry.com. I'll keep you posted as things develop.

Thank you for your support!!

NEW Badges Mean New Trackers!

Hi! Just wanted to drop by and let you all know I'm working on updating the badge trackers with all the new badges and journeys. You should have them in your hot little hands by the end of August. I will put up a blog post, post on Facebook and send out a newsletter so you'll know when they are ready. Happy Back to Troop!

Happy Summer! New Daisy, Junior And Cadette Resources!

Summer is such a different creature than it was when I was a kid in the 70's. Growing up in Southern California, we were out of school the third week of June and didn't go back until after Labor Day weekend. We spent barefoot days riding our bikes, playing outside, eating drippy popsicles and picking plums from the trees in our backyards. I remember a lot of stubbed toes! We generally drank TONS of Kool-Aid, ate Zingers, Laffy Taffy and Abba-Zabbas. We played in the sprinklers, watched late-night movies with our parents and generally never wore sunscreen unless we were at the river. These days kids get out anywhere from middle of May to beginning of June. Some of my friend's kids go back the first week of August or even the last week of July. A three month summer is a thing of the past. It's almost unheard of for kids to go back to school after Labor Day. This SHOULD BE A THING AGAIN!

Understanding that schools all over the U.S. start back early, I've adjusted my Back to Troop schedule to reflect this. I am fortunate to have all of your great minds requesting custom work and coming up with great ideas. It keeps me inspired. Thank you! And however long your summer is, enjoy the BBQs, long days and freedom for as long as they last <3

End of the Year: Bridging and Ceremonies

Can you feel it? Summer is in the air. The school year is winding down and it won't be long before our days and nights will include BBQs, swimming and sunshine. But before that, we have end of the year celebrations--graduations, bridging and awards ceremonies. I am super happy to be kept busy with custom orders. You all have the greatest ideas and I'm lucky enough to help you execute your vision. It keeps me inspired.

A New Freebie!

Back when I was a leader scouring the internet for resources, there were certain items that came up when you searched "Girl Scouts." Nine years later, these resources still pop up on Google. Some of them are OLD. Some so old, they look like they were photocopied from a ditto made in the early 80s (remember dittos?!). While there is nothing wrong with that, I always love the idea of making things new and pretty. So please accept this freebie, on behalf of my itchy design finger getting bored.

Download the trefoil here as a pdf or jpg.

Time Capsules

If you are between bridging years, or your girls are at an age where they are looking for an end of the year activity to spice things up, why not try a time capsule? One leader had this very idea. She got small cardboard mailing tubes and had each of the girls decorate the outside. Then they filled out a questionnaire. Into the tube it goes and voila! a time capsule. Three to five years down the line, the girls will open their tubes and read about their aspirations and interests from half a decade ago.

Ideas for the container:

My 6th grade teacher had us do a similar exercise. We wrote a letter to ourselves and included drawings of our dreams, hopes and aspirations, as well as likes and hobbies. Around the time I graduated high school, mine showed up in the mail. I still have it and cherish it. I later found that teacher on Facebook and let her know how much that meant to me. We talk often and she's is such an amazing woman, I was so fortunate to have her as a teacher. Here is a sneak peak at the iamstrawjenberry time capsule kit:

Laminate and use as the outer tag for the capsule.

Check out the time capsule kit in the iamstrawjenberry etsy store.

Daisy Year Completion Certificates

Another custom order has led to a new product in the store.  These are Daisy year completion certificates. The awesome thing about these certs is you can *customize* the design to include which petals and leaves the girls have earned! Here are some samples:

The certs are available for order in the etsy store.

Camp Shirt Design

I've made a new t-shirt design for 2018. Complete with free customizing of troop number and city or council name. You can choose single color or 3-color for screen printing. Custom designs are available too. Simply email me your ideas and I will make a one-of-a-kind design for your camp.

Check out the listing here.

Looking back on the troop year

A glorious troop leader reached out to me asking for a bridging questionnaire for the girls to fill out in preparation of their bridging story. This led to the following design:

This is an instant download that can be printed endlessly, each year of bridging. You can have the girls fill it out to use as talking points for the bridging ceremonies, or to put into a troop time capsule component. You can even frame it and give it out as a bridging gift. Go to the listing on etsy.

Last but not least, I am in the process of developing Daisy badge completion certificates. These will be supplemental to the Daisy petal and leaf certs. Stay tuned!

iamgirlscouts is now iamstrawjenberry! Introducing Brownie Badge Certificates!

This blog is five years old! Five years ago I transitioned from a Girl Scout leader to a Representative, to a National Delegate to a blogger and so much more. Last week, I was surprised but not shocked that I got an email from Etsy saying that GSUSA was requesting that I change my shop name. My shop is several years "younger" than my blog. Initially, when I chose my blog name I wanted it to signify that we are all Girl Scouts. I am. You are. She is.

And although I wasn't asked to change my *blog* name, just my shop name, I understand it may be coming too. I'm a graphic designer by day (and night) so eventually I'll offer more designs in my store than just Girl Scout products. So I've decided to embrace the change and extend it to the blog and Facebook page as well.  The shop has already been renamed. I'll be transitioning the Blog and Facebook over in the coming months.

Girl Scout Brownie Badge and Journey Certificates

And just in time for the new name is a new product! Thank you to Erin L. for suggesting the idea. If you guys tell me you want something, I'll make it. I'm very happy to debut a full set of Brownie Badge earning certificates. These are available in my shop via instant download. You simply print a set out for each girl and give them a certificate for every badge they earn and journey level they complete! Includes ALL NEW badges and journeys.

47 certificates total including:

  • (32) Thirty-two Skill-Building Badges;
  • (1) NEW Take Action badge;
  • (3) Three NEW Robotics Badges;
  • (3) Three older Journeys: It's Your Planet--Love It!, It's Your Story--Tell It! and It's Your World--Change It!;
  • (4) Four all NEW Journeys: Engineering, Computer Science, Outdoor and Outdoor STEM;
  • (3) Three NEW "Think Like A..." badges;
  • (1) One blank certificate for other awards like the Summit Award.

Once printed you can customize the certificates with each girl's name, date and troop leader. Each certificate features the Brownie elf.  Feel free to contact me if you want the certificates personalized.

Thank you for your support today and always. Over the last few months I've received three donations from very special people who visited the blog. I am so thankful for donations, as they keep up the site and allow me to make and provide freebies.

Lastly, I've got some cookie goodness coming for you all.  I've compiled and collected things over the past cookie season and I can't wait to share them with everyone.  I hope you had a wonderful cookie season. Now that it's spring, I'm sure you'll be planning lots of trips and campouts. Let me know if you need anything to help you lead this season and beyond.

xoxo
